First Lady Crissy Haslam visits Glendale Spanish Immersion Elementary 3rd graders to encourage reading

NASHVILLE – First Lady Crissy Haslam visited approximately 80 Glendale Spanish Immersion Elementary 3rd graders today to encourage their participation in the Read20 Family Book Club, a program inviting children and families to read together at least twenty minutes each day.

With their school located less than one mile from the Tennessee Residence, Glendale Elementary 3rd graders dress in costume and walk to the Tennessee Residence each Halloween to read with the First Lady. Due to inclement weather, this year Mrs. Haslam visited the students at their school. The First Lady read C.S. Lewis’ The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, the October Read20 Book of the Month, with students and delivered Halloween treats.“Daily reading is extremely important for student success, and the book club can be another resource for families to enjoy books together,” said Haslam. “This month’s book was Bill’s favorite book to read with our children when they were little.”

As part of her initiative as First Lady, Mrs. Haslam has been encouraging parents to engage in the academic lives of their children through reading and literacy. Studies show that students can be far more successful in school when parents and families promote reading and education at home. The First Lady’s Read20 Family Book Club features a new book and corresponding family activities each month, and it encourages at least twenty minutes of daily reading.

“Students spend the majority of their time outside of the school building,” said Haslam. “Parents and caregivers can have an invaluable impact on their child’s future in school and in life by valuing reading and education at home.”
