Technology is not needed to have your identity stolen

NASHVILLE --- The Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security along with the Tennessee Highway Patrol (THP) Identity Crimes Unit want to remind you not to forget about the old-school thief. He/she is still out there.

In today’s high-tech world, we have become so focused on protecting our identities digitally, that we often neglect to guard against traditional methods. Some thieves take advantage of this by stealing documents from mailboxes or trash. Remember to shred all documents containing personal identifiers and if you still pay bills by mailing checks, take them to the post office instead of putting them in your mailbox.

For more information on the THP’s Special Investigations Bureau and Identity Crimes Unit visit THP’s website http://www.tn.gov/safety/topic/sib.

An ounce of caution may just save you from a ton problems.

The Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security’s (www.TN.Gov/safety) mission is to serve, secure, and protect the people of Tennessee.
