MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Tennessee Department of Transportation crews are beginning a new phase on the I-40/240 interchange project.  The next phase of work begins the replacement of the Wolf River Bridge and opens the I-40 westbound flyover. The current bridge is 11 lanes (six westbound and five eastbound). The new bridge will have 13 lanes (seven westbound and six eastbound). The first phase of bridge construction will cause lane reductions and shifts on I-40 westbound. This construction configuration is for crews to safely begin bridge removal and rebuilding the outside lanes of the Wolf River Bridge. Detour map.

Beginning Saturday, September 12, 2015, I-40 westbound, just west of Sycamore View, lanes will shift to the inside. Motorists will have three travel lanes, one lane to continue Sam Cooper Boulevard, one lane I-240 west (existing flyover) and one lane I-40 westbound. The current I-40 westbound lane will be closed, which includes the Summer Avenue exit. A detour route will be posted. I-40 eastbound will continue to have four inside lanes open, two lanes I-240 east to I-40 east, one lane I-40 east (new flyover) and one lane Sam Cooper Boulevard. This first phase of bridge construction is estimated to be complete in the summer of 2016.
