OLD HICKORY, Tenn. – Tennessee Department of Transportation Commissioner John Schroer joined state and local officials today to celebrate the completion of an extensive bridge rehabilitation project on State Route 45 (Old Hickory Boulevard) in northeast Davidson County.

The $4.9 million project involved steel, deck, and pavement repair, in addition to railing replacement and new paint on the existing steel. The work, which began in December 2014, required long-term lane closures on the bridges.

The project was completed in late December.

The twin bridges span the Cumberland River and connect Old Hickory to Madison. The bridges were constructed in 1928 and 1967, and are two of only 50 truss-style bridges still in use in Tennessee.

Cleaning the towers at the bridge ends was added to the project after repairs began. The nearly 90-year-old structures were covered in vegetation and dirt, and required a delicate process to preserve the concrete.

Sen. Steven Dickerson (R-Nashville) and Rep. Bill Beck (D-Nashville) represent Davidson County in the Tennessee General Assembly and were on hand for the ribbon cutting.
