NASHVILLE – David Younger, a well-respected milling and paving crew supervisor for the Tennessee Department of Transportation, was killed in the line of duty on Thursday, April 28.

The milling crew was stopped on the shoulder of I-40 in Hickman County to change a flat tire when a tractor trailer struck one of the parked vehicles, killing Younger and injuring three other TDOT employees.

Highway maintenance worker Santana Smith, 22, was taken by life flight to Vanderbilt University Medical Center where he was later released. Two other milling crew members were taken by ambulance to local hospitals for treatment of minor injuries.

Younger, 65, was hired on with TDOT in 2010 as a highway maintenance worker. He quickly earned several promotions and had been serving as a field supervisor since July 2015.

Younger is survived by his wife of more than 40 years, two daughters, and grandchildren.
