KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Motorists traveling to and from North Carolina need to be aware of lane closures on I-40 beginning Wednesday, July 27th, only a few miles from the TN/NC state line.

One lane will be closed in both directions on I-40 near Mile Marker 7 in North Carolina in order for crews to finish a safety project in that area.  Work is expected to be complete by Friday. August 19th.

The following are detour routes for wide loads larger than 14 feet, and can also be used as alternate routes for motorists.  Significant delays are expected during peak travel times, such as morning rush hour.  This is a 55-mile detour/alternate route.

From East Tennessee (wide load detour and alternate route)

Motorists traveling on I-40 East can take I-81 North to I-26 East and then back to I-40 East in Asheville.

From Western North Carolina (wide load detour and alternate route)

Motorists traveling on I-40 West can take I-26 West to I-81 South, and then back to I-40 West near Dandridge.
