CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – The Tennessee Department of Transportation will temporarily close the Market Street Bridge (State Route 8) in downtown Chattanooga, Hamilton County, to perform routine cleaning of the bridge counterweights. The work is scheduled as follows.

  • Tuesday, August 2, AND Wednesday, August 3, from 8:00 p.m. EDT to 6:00 a.m. EDT each day

During the closure, crews will pressure wash the two large concrete counterweights on the bridge. The cleaning is necessary in order to maintain the structure.

The scheduled closure is weather dependent.  Should inclement weather or unforeseen circumstances prevent work from occurring as scheduled, it will be rescheduled.

Message boards are in place to alert motorists to the lane closures. Drivers are advised to plan ahead and utilize the Olgiati Bridge or the Veterans Bridge as alternate routes while the Market Street Bridge is closed.
