State Route 68 in Rhea County Closed Due to Roadway Slide

Tuesday, April 24, 2018 | 03:04pm

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. –Tennessee Department of Transportation has closed State Route 68 in Rhea County near log mile 5 because the roadway has become unstable due to a slide.  Recent wet weather caused cracks to open on the outside lane of the roadway earlier today, and TDOT had one lane closed on the road to evaluate the situation.  During the evaluation, the roadway continued to move, and late this afternoon a portion of the outside lane slid down the slope.

SR-68 will remain closed until further notice.  The site of the slide is approximately three miles north of U.S. 27 in Spring City, Tennessee.  Message boards will be posted notifying the public of the closure.

In 2016, the Tennessee Department of Transportation lost three workers in the line of duty. All three were struck by passing motorists. Those tragedies bring the total number of TDOT lives lost to 112. We don’t want to lose another member of our TDOT family. We’re asking you to WORK WITH US.
