I-440 Reconstruction Progress Update - April 2019

Monday, April 01, 2019 | 02:21pm

Currently, the contractor has over 100 people dedicated to the Interstate 440 Reconstruction project, working around-the-clock to help expedite work as much as possible. By mid-summer of 2019, the contractor expects to increase the number of dedicated employees to nearly 200 people. These numbers do not include the additional forces of the subcontractors.

Progress made since October 2018

Early Work (Preparatory work required to start roadway construction)

  • Installed all four new sound walls along the corridor
  • Relocated two miles of fiber
  • Relocated 3,000 linear feet of median lighting

Grading

  • 30% complete with grass median removal
  • Removed 30,000 cubic yards from grass median over the past month (enough dirt to fill an acre of land 20 feet high)
  • Removed 12,000 cubic yards existing concrete pavement

Drainage

  • Removed 400 linear feet of existing storm sewer in five days

Maintenance of Traffic

  • Traffic shifted over to Phase 1 of construction throughout the entire I-440 corridor over the course of approximately one month.

Anticipated Schedule

As we continue into spring and summer, motorists can expect to see more changes along I-440. Specifically this summer, crews will increase working hours with daytime and nighttime shifts and focus on the following.

  • Installing all new storm sewer drainage improvements in the median
  • Completing grass median and inside (left lane) travel lane removals
  • Rubblizing concrete to create new roadway pavement. Overnight rubblizing is currently anticipated to begin in May. Please check the schedule on the website for the most current information.
  • Placing new roadway pavement in inside (left lane) travel lanes
  • Transition to second construction phase to start removing and replacing outside (right lane) travel lanes
  • Preliminary operations to widen the I-440 bridges over Lealand and Craig avenues and I-65 are underway. Intermittent overnight ramp closures in the I-65/I-440 junction area are currently scheduled to start the week of April 8. Please check the website schedule for the latest information.

The project is on schedule to be completed by late July 2020. Remember to protect yourself, other drivers, and crews by obeying construction zone speed limits when travelling through the work zone.
