Imagine being a young child and losing a parent in a work-related injury.  Not only would you lose your mentor, your source of protection and your provider, but you would likely lose out on much of the future you had planned for too.  In 2018 alone, 122 Tennesseans went to work in the morning and did not return home that evening.  They died at work, leaving far too many children to face the stark reality of life without a parent.

According to the U.S. Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries, there were 5,250 fatal occupational injuries in the U.S. in 2018.  While it is unknown how many children were affected nationwide, 3,308 of those fatalities were workers between the ages of 20 and 55 – what many would consider to be the most formative years of parenthood.  Children of these workers will no longer be able to count on the income of the injured or killed parent.  Accompanying the grief of loss or the need to care for an injured parent is the increased likelihood that these children will not be able to afford a college education.  Here in Tennessee, Kids’ Chance helps to meet that need.

What is Kids' Chance?

Kids’ Chance is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that was created to provide educational opportunities and scholarships for the children of workers who were seriously injured or killed on the job.  Kids’ Chance believes that by investing in our children’s future, we can provide them with the resources to afford a college education, so they can make a difference in their own lives and in the lives of others.  Since its inception, Kids’ Chance has awarded over 6,500 scholarships totaling over $20 million. kidschanceoftn.org
