Presidents Island WMA

Directions and Description


Site Directions: from I-55 take Exit 11 west, and follow signs onto President’s Island. Lat: 35.118048, -Long:-90.074844. This is where Jack Carley Causeway crosses onto the island. 

The WMA is open year-round during daylight hours, please note hunting seasons.  Hunting and fishing license fees apply.  Hunters must check in at the hunter check station before hunting and check out at the completion of each day’s hunt. The permit will be held while hunters hunt. Access is allowed only to TWRA authorized personnel and permit holders, or as otherwise specified by rule or proclamation. Access is permitted from Farm Road only. No access is permitted from the Mississippi River, McKellar Lake, or from the Causeway.

The loop road around the industrial complex is where many local specialties are found.  You can find  Western Kingbirds, Scissor-tailed FlycatchersPainted Buntings, and (if you are really lucky) White-winged Doves are found.  Presidents Island WMA is closed and gated to public access, but the gravel road that leads you out onto the WMA hasn't had gates since the May 2011 flood. Some local specialties are also found here.

Typical woodland and early successional species can be found but, the local specialties here include Western KingbirdsScissor-tailed FlycatchersPainted Buntings, and (if you are really lucky) White-winged Doves.  All but the Scissor-tailed Flycatchers are typically only found in Shelby Co., TN, and specifically this part of Memphis.

Regulations & Dates


Hunters must check in at the hunter check station before hunting and check out at the completion of each day’s hunt. The permit will be held while hunters hunt.

Access is allowed only to TWRA authorized personnel and permit holders, or as otherwise specified by rule or proclamation.

Youth permit holders must be accompanied by a non-hunting adult.

Deer (Archery) - One (1) hunt: Oct 18 - 20, 2024. Hunter quota 50. Bag limit (1) one antlered deer, which must have nine (9) antler points or a minimum outside beam spread of twenty (20) inches. The scouting date is Oct. 17, 2024, for the Oct. 18 - 20, 2024 permit holders only.

Deer (Archery) - One (1) hunt: Dec. 6 - 8, 2024. Hunter quota 50. Bag limit one (1) antlered deer, which must have nine (9) antlered points or a minimum outside beam spread of twenty (20) inches. Scouting date: Dec. 5, 2024, for the Dec. 6 - 8, 2024 permit holders only.
