Preparing Students for College and Career

The department is focused on making Tennessee the state with the fastest improving student achievement, and on preparing those students for college and careers. Tennessee is the first state in the nation to have a fully funded K-14 public education, thanks to Gov. Bill Haslam’s Tennessee Promise, and the department is committed to helping districts ensure that their students are ready to take advantage of this opportunity. To achieve these ambitious goals, the department oversees the implementation of academic standards and policies adopted by the State Board of Education, as well as instructional practices that help students succeed.
