TDOE Awards Funding to Tennessee Charter Schools

NASHVILLE—Today Education Commissioner Penny Schwinn announced that 117 charter schools will receive approximately half of the $12 million that was allocated to the department’s Charter School Facilities fund in Governor Lee’s budget. The money is designed to ensure that students in a Tennessee charter school are being educated in an environment that supports student achievement, safety, and well-being.

Funding can be spent for any of the following purposes:

  • Property purchases to relocate or establish a school,
  • Fund general improvements to existing facilities,
  • Assist with costs associated with purchasing/leasing underutilized or vacant property, or
  • Support existing capital outlay projects.

This $5.85 million will be distributed to schools in six districts based on the number of students they serve. In mid-November, a competitive grant will be made available to all charter schools throughout the state that will receive the remaining $6 million.
