Communicable Disease

Be Ready for Disease Outbreaks or Pandemics

o   Store a two-week supply of water and food.

o   Periodically check your prescription drugs to ensure you have a continuous supply.

o   Have nonprescription drugs and health supplies in hand, such as pain relievers, stomach remedies, cough and cold medicines, fluids with electrolytes, and vitamins.

o   Keep electronic and paper copies of health records, insurance information, and physician contacts.

o   Talk with family members about how they would be cared for if they get sick, or what will be needed to care for them in your home.

During an Outbreak or Pandemic

o   Avoid close contact with those who are sick.

o   If you are sick, keep your distance from others to protect them from getting sick, too.

o   Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing. It may prevent those around you from getting sick.

o   Washing your hands will often protect you from germs.

o   Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth.

o   Practice other good health habits:  get plenty of sleep, be physically active, manage your stress, drink plenty of fluids, and eat nutritious food.
