Session Description
As election time nears, attorneys and judges have ethical duties that can be implicated by political activity. These ethical duties concern the participation in the political process as a candidate for office, acting as an advocate for a candidate, raising funds for a candidate, and advertising for a candidate.
This session will explore ethical considerations related to political activity by lawyers and judges. The course will focus on identifying the limits of political activity placed on lawyers and judges by the Code of Professional Conduct and the Canons of Judicial Ethics.
Learning Objectives:
- Identify the limits of political activity for judges and lawyers, but also learn to recognize appropriate political activity
- Investigate lawyers’ and judges’ duties to “self-police” the profession in terms of political activity
- Identify the consequences for political participation that falls outside ethical bounds
